Dear Sirs,
I just received your email-newsletter and I immediately recognized I wanted to cancel.
You deserve to know the reasons, because I think it is unuseful to apply efforts developing tourism and then let them vanish with a bad behaviour.
I have a motorhome and I bought it recently mainly because, having two small children, I need to use the bathroom, the bed and the kitchen when I want, and not when I'm supposed to as when I'm in a hotel and/or another accomodation.
We were used to come to Salzburg often, but since last time was far in the past, we decided to come last year with our motorhome.
Before leaving Italy we asked for any kind of information from you about your city and about where to stay during the night with our motorhome: we decided we would have used Camping NORD SAM in the north.
Anyway, we also wanted to visit the city and for the above reasons we were moving our motorhome from the camping to the city center every morning, parking it under the trees in a square next to Hubert-Sattler-Gasse (Mirabell Platz ?) and paying for our parking.
This way we could have our bathroom not far from the center of the city and the needed beds for afternoon-rest of our children, while we were visiting the city.
One evening we decided having dinner in a restaurant in Klanzlmarkt with some friends from Salzburg. When we came back to our motorhome, to go back to the camping (it was around midnight), we found a very unpleasant message on the front window of our motorhome.
The message, which was also wrong because reported a possible fine in Austrian Schillings (abandoned time ago...), reported that camping was not possible outside of camping sites in Austria and we were risking getting a police-notice.
On the back a map of the city and available campings were drawn.
This paper was also pretending being printed on "official municipaly paper", while it was indeed only a photocopy of a fax message sent from the Municipality to someone...
We do not know exactly which is the law about camping in Austria, but we know that in Italy, a motorhome is considered being first of all a vehicle as all the others.
To consider a motorhome being camping it has to either:
- be placed on something else beside wheels (foots or other means);
- being using a step to enter the door which is getting out of the motorhome shape;
- being flushing any kind of liquid from the motorhome itself;
- have at least one open window which is getting out of the motorhome shape.
Otherwise it is considered being only PARKING.
That is what we were doing: we were only parking while having dinner in a restaurant.
By the way:
- is it legal to sleep in a car correctly parked in a car park in Austria ?
- is it legal to eat a sandwich in a car correctly parked in a car park in Austria ?
If the people living in Salzburg does not want to see motorhomes in the city, then this people can surely live without the motorhome tourism.
Just for your information: we spent over 500 Euros in 4 days in 4 persons while visiting the city (museums accesses, parks, restaurants, gifts and whatelse...)
But we will choose different destinations for our vacations next time. And for our money too...
Regards.

Se c'era qualcun'altro, si ricorderà sicuramente dell'episodio, e se qualcuno preferisse la versione italiana della lettera, basta che me lo dica, la traduco anche... :D
